So the 21 Degrees Cigar & Accessories lounge owner, Pat Mitchel, reached out to a little known cigar company to help bring in the guests – Rocky Patel. Thus Scottsdale cigar smokers with a large cigar budget now have the ability to visit 21 Degrees Cigar & Accessories and join the ever so comfortable “Rocky Patel Cigar Lounge”.

So what’s behind the name of this particular cigar lounge? Let’s get that explanation directly from the website: “You are probably wondering what 21 Degrees stands for. The optimum temperature for cigars is 21 degrees Celsius, which is 70 degrees Fahrenheit, and the optimum humidity is 70 percent. We strive to have the best environment for our premium cigars in our spacious cedar walk in humidor so what better than 21 Degrees.

Walking through the front door and with a quick glance you can take in the entire public section of the shop. The cash register is to the left, some accessories are located to the right and just passed that is the everyman lounge. This everyman’s lounge is done quite well with fully reclining leather seats that are perfectly situated in front of a nice T.V. However it’s important to note that the “everyman” lounge is only capable of accommodating about 4 people.

The well-stocked humidor is located at the end of the lounge next to the “everyman” section. Selection is great and you are able to find anything from the popular boutique to the … general General cigar. Prices are on par with out lounges in the area but they usually have a deals section that offers cigars at a great discount. This humidor also contains a number of lockers that are situated high above the cigars making it seem somewhat tedious to access.

Rocky Patel, love or hate his cigars, always operates in style and the cigar lounge bearing his name is no different. Walk through the vault door labeled “Members Only” and enter a world of great luxury. The RP lounge has a beautiful pool table, a great number of dark leather lounge chairs, group seating, a card table in the back, and a bar in the very back. Members get to share an area that appears to be about the same size, if not bigger, than the entire public section. 21 Degrees was built for its members and this can clearly be felt and experienced, which is not necessarily a good thing for the “everyman”.

I would like to take the time to acknowledge the great staff at 21 Degrees Cigar & Accessories. Everyone was courteous, personable and extremely knowledgeable. There was not a single tobacco fact or cigar (industry) question that we couldn’t get answered by the people who were assisting us.

21 Degrees Cigar & Accessories with the Rocky Patel Lounge is one great experience that everyone will enjoy. This is a great shop to become a member of if you’re longing to belong somewhere or just simply need a smoking haven. However the “everyman” might feel a little uncomfortable if he’s not one of the early travels to the lounge.

Rocky Patel Event Dual Torch http://puffingcigars.com/cigar-accessories/rocky-patel-event-dual-torch-lighter/4105/ http://puffingcigars.com/cigar-accessories/rocky-patel-event-dual-torch-lighter/4105/#comments Mon, 23 Nov 2009 08:00:36 +0000 Rob http://puffingcigars.com/?p=4105 Rocky Patel Dual TorchWe’ve gotten a lot of questions and comments lately wondering we haven’t featured more of Rocky Patel’s cigars on our website. The truth is between the cigars released via the different catalogs and shops we would be doing a review just about every day. BUT – to please you Rocky Patel fans out there we have decided to review the best thing Rocky has put his name to in a while: The Rocky Patel Event Dual Torch Lighter.

The Rocky Patel Event Dual Torch lighter is a sleek pull down piece of machinery that comes in black, gunmetal and silver colors. The all metal body gives it a nice heavy feel in your hands and is slim enough to fit in your jeans without taking up too much space.

The slide down ignition is easy to use for our large fumbling hands that sends two jets of fire shooting towards your cigar. These jets are are covered by a big metal top that snaps firmly in place to prevent any unintentional lights.  The only markings on the body is the “RP” logo that is printed in the middle and has yet to come (yes we tried to take it off with our keys).

Towards the bottom of the body is a very large and easy to read fuel meter that displays the amount of fuel in the Rocky Patel torch. The fuel capacity is very large and holds more than a months worth of heavy cigar lighting.

The bottom has a small but adequate punch that pops out revealing the fill nozzle and the flame adjuster.  The flame adjuster does require a very small flat edge to move. So adjusting the flame is not an easy thing on the go but this does prevent a surprising light if you happen to toss it around a bit.

Rocky Patel Event Dual Torch is the perfect lighter for all you Rocky Patel fanatics to add to the collection or for people who need a lighter with a large capacity. MSRP for the dual torch is about $60 but like most of Rocky Patel’s items you can find it for less than half online.

rocky patel olde world reserveWhen one hears the phrase “Olde World” it immediately transports them back to a time of explorers and conquistadors. Indeed it is in the very history of the Columbus discovery, that the Europeans had their first real interaction with cigars. Since then the story of the cigar has been a storied and colorful one. Living up to its moniker is the Rocky Patel Olde World Reserve, which immediately transports one into the rich and full experience of a well crafted cigar.

Construction: The construction of the Rocky Patel Olde World Reserve reflects the vision of Rocky Patel to create the ultimate cigar to represent his line. It is truly an exercise in patience and research that has brought Rocky to the apogee in his cigar lineup. The cigar that I smoked was the Rocky Patel Olde World Reserve corojo robusto. The Olde World is of a nice box pressed finish with a sturdy cap, that just begs to be punched. With the most minimal of efforts, I was able to do a shallow punch that allowed for an exquisite draw. The corojo wrapper while fraught with veins, was tightly constructed and showed no splits or tears. Oftentimes one can thumb through a box of cigars, and see where the veins have allowed for tears or splits to develop, but I am pleased to announce that in my review of the box and stick, I saw no such issue.

Draw: As aforementioned in the preceding paragraph the draw was impeccably smooth, and allowed for plumes of smoke to come billowing out at each satisfying inhalation of the Olde World.

Burn: The burning of the Olde World is a testament to the fine construction of the stick. Throughout the experience the binder stayed intact, and the burn lines gradually moved up the stick at an even pace. No tunneling was detected, and the ash was solid grey, and had a striated pattern as is evidenced in the accompanying pictures. The ash was also firm enough to stay in place until one is ready to ash the cigar.

As a brief aside, of all brands that I have smoked, the most ash I have ever been able to accumulate without collapse has always come from a Rocky Patel stick.

Flavor: The flavor of a finely crafted cigar is always an enjoyable thing, and the fullness of the Olde world is both complex and smooth. The cigar’s potency is a medium body that builds to a full about midway through. At the onset of the experience the palate will detect a hint of spice, and from there it builds into a unique floral aroma. The best way to describe it is by way of the taste one can detect when walking through a freshly watered botanical garden. In short it is earthy and pleasant; this flavor remains until about the midpoint or final third of the stick. For the final stretch the cigar takes on a nutty complexity that interchanges with a rich tobacco taste of an old English styled pipe tobacco. Needless to say the flavor and aroma are in union to create a wonderful treat for the palate!

Overall Opinion: From start to final draw this cigar is one finely crafted stick. The beautiful thing is that it is a testament that some of the best things in life don’t come with heavy price tags. The usual price is around nine to ten dollars, and it has a wonderful economy about it, in that it is a super premium smoke for a mid range price. As my one friend puts it “The Olde World Reserve is a poor man’s Padron Anniversary.” I think this is a great way to get the flavor of a super premium Padron at a fraction of the cost. Rocky Patel has continually crafted fine cigars, and this is the crowning jewel to his collection. So if you fancy a journey into the complexly full and beautiful world of fine cigars, then grab a Rocky Patel Olde World Reserve and taste the heritage and history of a proud pastime with each satisfying puff!

Rocky Patel Spring Collection 2009 http://puffingcigars.com/cigar-reviews/rocky-patel-spring-collection-2009/2624/ http://puffingcigars.com/cigar-reviews/rocky-patel-spring-collection-2009/2624/#comments Sat, 13 Jun 2009 18:20:05 +0000 Rob http://puffingcigars.com/?p=2624 Wrapper: Sumatra
Filler: Nicaragua
Size: Robusto(5 x 50)
Strength: Medium

Construction: The Rocky Patel Spring Collection 2009 did not have the best construction. This Rocky cigar had lots of veins and even started cracking during our smoke session. Some of the cigars from the back even started to come unraveled. The tobacco was firmly packed – we have to give it some credit somewhere.

Draw: Rocky Patel Spring Collection 2009 has a great draw. You can be comfortable cutting or punching the stick and not have to worry about the smoke.

Burn: Rocky Patel Spring Collection 2009 is fairly even but can still be described as jagged. The wrapper did crack on a couple sticks and even came unraveled during the smoking process. On a positive note I can say the Rocky Patel did burn at just the right pace. The ash was somewhat flaky and white in color with a few gray sections.

Taste: The Rocky Patel Spring Collection 2009 starts off with a nice spice but quickly mellows out. This Rocky Patel doesn’t have very many unique flavors and everything is just neutral. An earthy, chocolaty, undertone will reside in the finish of this Spring cigar. The smoke is smooth and easy on the palate.

Consistent in flavor, this Rocky Patel Spring Collection is still earthy and the smoke is still great. The chocolate can still be tasted lingering in the background keeping this cigar in the medium body range.

Earthy, earthy, earthy are the only words I can find to describe the final third of this cigar. Consistent all the way through you are finishing with a chocolate flavor, perhaps even some coffee, and there might be a slight introduction of some nutty notes.

Final Verdict: Rocky Patel Spring Collection 2009 has a $7.xx price range. Rocky Patel makes decent cigars that are good to keep in the humidor, this one is inparticular is going to be a love it or blah (boring) smoke. Due to the limited release of the Sping Collection, the consistency in flavors and the price point I would keep a few of these cigars in the humidor. Stopping me from buying the whole box would be the wrapper, burn and lack of any unique flavor profiles.
