Hoyo de Monterrey Epicure Especial – What’s the Fuss All About?

Submitted by Alex on February 11, 2013 – 4:01 amNo Comment

I don’t know many French guys, but many of the French cigars smokers that I know have told me about Hoyo de Monterrey. Of course, they meant the one made on the island of Cuba for Habanos SA and not the Honduran one.  I have a guess why they are keen on this particular brand – you know how French people like French things, and all Hoyo de Monterrey cigars have French names since the Le Hoyo series was created for Swiss company A Dürr Co around the 1940s.

Anyway, I decided to order the Hoyo de Monterrey Epicure Especial to see what the fuss is all about. Since I am a US resident, the only way I could purchase them was online, that is why I got them from a reliable online source,  http://cuban-cigars-store.com. When the cigars arrived (in perfect condition, I might say), I inspected the contents of the box because looks are as important as taste. The Epicure Especial turned out to be a very nice looking cigar with a beautiful dark brown wrapper. I also like the Hoyo de Monterrey Epicure Especial double band.

Well, enough about the looks, let’s talk about the taste. The wrapper of the cigar had a pleasant spicy and earthy smell. I felt more spices as I lit the cigar, which were then followed by warm woody undertones. Moving toward the middle of the cigar, I’ve also noticed the flavor of cocoa and spice. Heading in to the final third of the cigar, I felt the mushroom earthy flavor.

Eighty minutes (and two and a half glasses of whisky) later, I was finished with the Hoyo de Monterrey Epicure Especial, and the draw was quite good.

And though I can’t say that I suddenly became an Hoyo de Monterey’s fan, I can relate to my French co-aficionados. If you are into medium bodied cigars, you will not be disappointed. This is a good example of how you don’t need a full-bodied cigar to enjoy full flavor. And if you don’t already have a Cuban cigar provider and are looking to order the Hoyo de Monterrey Epicure Especial, http://cuban-cigars-store.com might be a good choice.
