Smuggling Update

Cuba Cigar SmugglingDouglas Hiner is the Omaha man that was caught smuggling 27,000 Cuban cigars, 30 pounds of coffee, and 42 rum liquor bottles (we initially wrote about the story here) was recently sentenced.

Visiting a federal courtroom in Fort Myers, Fla., Mr. Hiner was sentenced to three years probation.

I’m very relieved,” Hiner said in a local interview “I had moved everything out of my apartment and into a storage locker. Basically, I thought I was going to jail.

The official who was conducting the presentencing investigation was recommending prison time due to the value of the goods. Value placed on the cigars was roughly $200,000.

U.S. District Judge John E. Steele was fair with Hiner after reading many letters that friends submitted on his behalf.

Now Douglas Hiner is a felon. He can’t own a gun and he can’t get a passport to travel out of the country (so no more cigars) but Mr.Hiner has his eyes set on repurchasing the boat that was seized from him.

Obviously, I wasn’t a good smuggler,” he said. “But it was a victimless crime. Essentially it was a political crime.

On an interesting note: President Bill Clinton nominated Steele to the United States District Court for the Middle District of Florida. I would like to think that Clinton would only nominate another cigar lover to such a position. Perhaps this is why Hiner only recieved probation?
