Manuel Quesada in Arizona
Master Blender Manuel “Manolo” Quesada and owner of Manufactura de Tabacos S.A. (MATASA) is in Arizona this week promoting the new Casa Magna Oscuro and the limited edition Q35 cigars. Mr. Quesada and his company are also known for the Fonseca line of cigars and for producing the number one cigar of 2008, the Casa Magna.
Quesada will be making many stops to various cigar lounges in the state of Arizona. During his time he will hold a single event at Casa Fuma Fine Cigars in Gilbert. The event will take place November 11th from 5:30-9:30 pm.
However the star of the show will be the Quesada 35th Anniversary cigar. This is a cigar that has been blended and created by the “next generation” of the Quesada family.
Raquel Quesada describes the cigar as:
“As the 5th generation, we’ve become more and more excited about taking that familiarity to a new level and a new direction . . . not to take away from what has been done over the past 35 years, but rather to add something new to the mix.
That is the Quesada 35th Anniversary cigar.”

The product of months of blending by the six members of the fifth generation of the Quesada family to be involved in tobacco, the Quesada 35th Anniversary shows the potential of the future of the MATASA factory.
Thoroughly modern in concept and execution, the Quesada 35th is a box-pressed Toro of six inches and 49 ring gauge, adorned with a double band at the head and a special footer band to protect the wrapper against damage. The gorgeous, dark Arapiraca wrapper leaf was grown in Ecuador rather than Brazil and is combined with a Criollo ‘98-seed binder grown in the Dominican Republic and filler leaves of Vuelta Arriba-seed ligero from the Dominican and ligero from Nicaragua.
As expected from this blend, it’s a medium-to-full-bodied smoke with the edge and character one anticipates from today’s youth. It opens with a burst of spicy and peppery flavors that excite the mouth and stay far away from even a hint of bitterness. This spirit and verve continue throughout the cigar, giving it a flair that lasts into the last third.
This is a different style of cigar than one has come to expect from MATASA and founder Manolo Quesada. It is more intense, restless and free, but also exhibits a smoothness and balance that bode well for the future.
The Quesada 35th Anniversary is being produced in a limited quantity of 1,000 boxes (of 20).
