General Cigar Departure
Ernesto Perez-Carrillo, the original maker and owner of La Gloria Cubana cigars, is leaving General Cigar Co.
General Cigar Co., owned by Swedish Match, purchased El Credito Cigars from Perez-Carrillo in 1999 for an undisclosed sum of money.
Perez-Carrillo was kept on by General Cigar Co. to run the day to day operations and oversee production. His official last day with the company will be March 15, 2009.
“One of the main reasons I decided to leave is that my children want to get involved with the new company,” Perez-Carrillo told Cigar Aficionado in an interview. “The opportunity to work with my kids is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.”
Perez-Carrillo and his family will essentially be starting from scratch. General Cigar Co. will retain all of the factories and personnel currently involved in making and marketing of the cigar.
Internet forums have been in an uproar of excitement because many believe the cigars suffered by being under the General Cigar Co. control.
We wish Ernesto Perez-Carrillo and his family luck and success with their new ventures.
