FDA Regulates Tobacco
“Joe Camel will be given a life sentence and put away forever,” said Richard Durbin of Illinois, the chamber’s No. 2 Democrat.
The Senate has voted to give the FDA power to restrict how some tobacco products are introduced into the market. This bill will let the U.S. Food and Drug Administration limit the amount of nicotine, put larger warning labels on products that will outline health risks, and ban other products that may target young smokers.
Outlawed in the bill will be flavored cigarettes such vanilla, chocolate, and cherry. Cloves will also be banned for sale in the United States. Rewards systems will also be banned – all in hopes of curving smoking in the younger age groups.
Oddly enough the bill fails to ban the most popular of all flavors: menthol. Menthol cigarettes account for 27 percent of the entire cigarette market.
The president called this “a bill that truly defines change in Washington” and “changes the way Washington works and who Washington works for.”
PuffingCigars.com calls this a scary bill.
Is this the beginning of a ban of tobacco in the United States? Will cigars move into the government cross hairs? Will smoking, anywhere, at anytime, be banned altogether?
Or are we just being paranoid?
