Avelino Lara Passes Away
Cigar master Avelino Lara passed away Tuesday, October 27th due to complications with thyroid cancer. Avelino Lara, who was once Fidel Castro’s personal roller, is known for his work in the El Laguito Factory. This is the factory that produce the Cohiba, Trinidad, and many Cuban Davidoff cigars.
After decades in the Cuban cigar market Avelino Lara moved over to Graycliff Cigars in 1996. After living sometime in Nassau, and rolling cigars for Graycliff.
The Graycliff website tells the story of his transition: “Discontent over government interference with his artistry led Avelino Lara to abandon Cuba. He had reached the age of retirement when Graycliff’s Enrico Garzaroli offered Lara his own factory in Nassau with the only condition being that he create memorable cigars.”
Some years later Avelino Lara officially retired and moved back to Havana, Cuba.
Avelino Lara had true passion and love, and endless knowledge, for cigars and for the people in the community.
“He had a passion for his art that no one can replicate,” said Enrico Garzaroli, chairman of Graycliff.
To a man who created cigars that graced the most esteemed of humidors, brought enjoyment to all and had a drive for perfection: You will be missed.
RIP Mr. Avelino Lara
